Republicans across the country have found a new boogeyman: critical race theory. State legislators in Texas, Iowa, Idaho, Tennessee, Florida and Oklahoma have tried to ban it in some way or another — mostly by controlling what teachers can and can’t say about America’s history with race in the classroom. They argue that critical race theory is divisive reverse racism, and that they are trying to protect our history and our students.
