An S&P 500 10% below its May high and a Nasdaq down 13% from its peak in July take a toll on the number of stocks able to meet the strict requirements that drive the Sector Leaders list.

A year ago, as the market was gearing to swing into this lengthy consolidation, the Sector Leaders showed eight stocks, vs. two on the current list. Ulta Beauty (ULTA), a current retail Sector Leader, was also on that year-ago list – just below a flat base buy point.
